Canadian Singer Confirms Audition With Ex-GUNS N' ROSES Members
January 4, 2003Vancouver-based singer Todd Kerns, of AGE OF ELECTRIC and STATIC IN STEREO fame, has confirmed that he has been invited to audition for the lead vocalist position in a new band comprised of former members of GUNS N' ROSES.
The band, tentatively dubbed THE PROJECT, features Slash, Duff McKagan, Izzy Stradlin and Matt Sorum, all formerly of GN'R. The group launched a highly publicized search for a singer earlier this year, and have already auditioned a number of well-known candidates, including former SKID ROW frontman Sebastian Bach, ex-BUCKCHERRY singer Joshua Todd, DAYS OF THE NEW leader Travis Meeks, PSYCHOTICA's Pat Briggs, LIT's A. Jay Popoff and former NEUROTICA frontman Kelly Shaefer.
Apparently, though, the search is far from over.
"I was sent three songs to work on," Kerns told Chart Attack. "Every singer on the planet has been sent three songs to work on. I am to write lyrics and record vocals to three instrumental tracks that the guys recorded… 'Appetite For Destruction' is still in my Top 3 greatest rock records of all time, so I do find the entire thing amusingly surreal."
Kerns says he'll get to work on the tracks this week, but is trying to downplay his potential involvement in THE PROJECT, making it very clear that he has not actually been asked to join the band. Todd, who is busy producing an album by SUPERBEING 77, is also working on his solo album and getting ready to play a gig with his new band, TKO. Catch him on Jan. 23 at the Back Alley in Calgary.
Meanwhile, another name has surfaced on the list of potential vocalists for THE PROJECT: Shawn Albro, lead vocalist for the band UPO. Like all the other candidates, Albro is believed to have laid down his vocals over several instrumental tracks recently recorded by the group and is currently awaiting word from Slash and co. regarding a possible further collaboration.
